Where and When?

North Hope has two studio homes, one in Hampton (within walking distance of all Hampton schools) and one in Durham (in Faculty Neighborhood).

Durham: Mondays & Wednesdays

Hampton: Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday

What genre does Bethany teach?

My approach as a teacher is called “vocal cross-training” in the vocal pedagogy world. This refers to studying multiple genres at once in order to maintain vocal health and bolster the versatility of your voice. When we do lessons, we certainly have one genre of focus, this can be pop, folk, classical, christian contemporary, etc. But we will always be studying music from all over the world and all over history.

How much do lessons cost?

The cost of private lessons is as follows:

30 Minute Lesson: $32 ($512 per 16 week semester)

45 Minute Lesson: $47 ($752 per 16 week semester)

60 Minute Lesson: $62 ($992 per 16 week semester)

Group lessons cost the base hourly rate plus $15 per additional student.

Tuition is charged in sixteen week semesters in two installments. First installment is upon registration, the second is due the first lesson.

We highly value giving students an opportunity to show-case their skills and gain experience working with a professional collaborative pianist. For this reason, there will be a small recital fee for each semester so we can provide this experience for our end of semester recital.

What can I do in semi-private lessons?

The options here are endless! Here are some examples:

  • Pair up siblings to either learn together, split lesson time, or a mix of the two. This works great if you have a pre-k/early elementary student who isn’t ready for a 30 minute lesson. They can absolutely tack on 15 minutes to an older sibling’s lesson, and also learn by watching and hearing their sibling’s lesson.

  • Form a small group with your friends or family and get trained on singing as an ensemble. Learn to sing in harmony, bring in simple percussion instruments, form a family band, lots of exciting options here.

  • Have siblings (or friends!) overlap lessons to do theory training together but have technique training separate.

What can I do in private lessons?

Here are three examples of a lesson “focus” or statement of intent. We can build our own for you, or you can pick one of these.

1. Singing and understanding the human voice

In these lessons, the primary focus is singing. Bethany uses evidence-based techniques and exercises to help you find you authentic sound and be able to produce it in a healthy, sustainable way. Music theory and ear training will certainly be involved, but not the primary focus.

2. Mastering Musicianship

In mastering musicianship, we use the human voice as our vessel through which we learn music theory, train our musical ears, and gain musicianship skills that transfer to any musical path of study.

3. Beginner Instrumental Accompaniment

These sessions focus on learning to sing and play at the same time. Beginner training in student’s choice of guitar, piano, or ukulele is paired with lessons in singing. These lessons are great for students looking to become a “campfire” player, worship leader, or singer/songwriter.

What if I miss a lesson?

Student Cancellations: If you are sick or traveling, I am happy to do an online lesson through Google Meet. If online is not possible, I will use your reserved lesson time to work on your behalf—creating custom practice tracks, researching exercises, or reviewing a video of your singing.

Instructor Cancellations: If I need to cancel, I will provide makeup lesson options.
